Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have experience reading and listening to stories, in both English and Spanish. It's my hope that by building a rich library in both Spanish and English, that they will develop a love for reading, as well as learn more about, and celebrate their culture.
I teach in a dual-language second garde classroom that's made up of about 50% native English and native Spanish speakers every year.
Both English and Spanish speaking families are excited for their children to learn Spanish/English and excel in academics. They all learn together in my classroom, and help each other out in both languages. My school has about two dual-language class in each grade level. Our classroom library is lacking in Spanish literature.
My Project
I want my students to fall in love with reading! One way to foster this love of books and reading is through engaging book series. When students get captivated by a story or character and they will want to read more. Popular book series in my classroom library will give students more options.
My children love reading about various characters through different books.
They have awesome conversations discussing how the same character acted in different books. I love to listen to their discussions and actually observe how they are able to cite evidence from the text to support their ideas.
In our classroom we would use the books for small guided reading lessons and independent reading. Having multiple copies of each text will allow us to have small reading groups where my students can discuss a text together to increase not only their reading skills but their Spanish vocabulary and language as well. These groups will help to promote their deeper understanding of a text.
