Series Books and Non-fiction Texts for Developing Readers!
My students need exciting and interesting books on their reading level! Providing them with classic series books and non-fiction texts helps them develop a love of reading and a deeper understanding of the world around them!

My Students
My students live in Wards 7 and 8 in Washington, DC. This is a low-income neighborhood, but my students refuse to let that be a determinant of their future. In my classroom, the students are seven-, eight-, and nine-year-olds with a range of learning and/or social-emotional disabilities. The typical student reads at a first-grade level; they need to be surrounded by a classroom library that supports their needs.
My students show up every day with a smile, dedicated to growing in reading and writing, no matter how difficult the task.
They are excited by their growth as literarians, eagerly working toward reading chapter books and writing about them with ease. They can and will get there by immersing themselves in books at their current level and pushing their comprehension strategies. By fostering a deep love of reading, we can ensure that they will continue to read into adulthood, learning about the world around them.
My Project
This project consists of several classic series books - Arthur, Clifford, Judy Moody, Stink, and Magic Tree House - that are on my students' reading levels. Series books are incredibly important. Students invest in the main characters of the series and chart the character developments across various books. Reading series books allow students to do critical thinking about character traits, character emotions, and character change. These skills will help them grow reading levels quickly, getting closer to closing the achievement gap.
My students deserve the opportunity to find a series that they love, characters who become their best friends.
Last year, I witnessed my students fall in love with Little Critter, Henry and Mudge, Dear Dragon, Splat the Cat - all thanks to your donations. As a result, they've grown several reading levels over the year! Let's do it again with series books on higher reading levels.
This project also includes non-fiction books. Last year, I witnessed students struggle to feel comfortable with informational or persuasive texts. How then will they learn about the world around them? I want to create a classroom library that increases exposure to non-fiction text even at the lowest level so that we can start to develop well-informed citizens. Help me shape a better, more informed tomorrow!
