Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our school, we are a community dedicated to nurturing both the hearts and minds of our students. Our mission is to inspire curiosity, foster a love of learning, and build the knowledge and skills that empower children to become lifelong learners.
We take pride in knowing each student by name, strength, and need.
Many of our students face varying levels of trauma, which can affect how they show up each day. As a team, we are committed to meeting each child where they are, offering the support and understanding they need to thrive.
To help students regulate their emotions and prepare for learning, every classroom and space in our building includes a Calm Down Corner. These areas have sensory items designed to offer a safe, calming environment where students can reset their minds and bodies when experiencing big emotions.
In addition to Calm Down Corners, we are excited to introduce a sensory wall to our school environment. Sensory walls engage students through tactile, visual, and auditory experiences, helping them to regulate emotions, reduce anxiety, and regain focus when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated.
Equally important to us is ensuring that every child feels a strong sense of belonging. Through daily community circles and schoolwide community-building activities, students build meaningful connections.
One of our upcoming initiatives is a schoolwide project where student teams will collaborate to design and create individual sensory squares for Slater’s very first sensory wall. This will be a powerful way for students to contribute to a shared space that supports their emotional well-being and creativity.
