Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am asking for help providing sensory tools and toys for my students who are unique learners with high support needs to access their alternative curriculum. I have been a school-based occupational therapist since 2003 and this year I have the pleasure of working with a group of new students who receive instruction within a moderate to severe separate classroom. I have a few students this year who have profound developmental delays resulting in difficulty accessing alternative curriculum without extensive support in the area of sensory processing.
The sensory tools and toys will help my students with high support needs stay engaged within the learning environment, get ready to learn, and have options for free time that are safe and build skills.
When a student experiences profound developmental delays and has high support needs they require tools and toys that utilizes the senses to stay engaged within the learning environment.
The ability to have several choices of sensory tools and toys versus a few helps with being able to rotate toys to prevent boredom. When students of this profile become bored they can leave the learning environment, they can become irritated or anxious, and sometimes engage in self-injurious behaviors. When students of this profile have a wide variety of materials it can help the student follow the established routine, stay calm, and stay safe. The sensory tools and toys engage vision, hearing, and touch through light, music, and various textures. It can help the student get ready to use their hands for purposeful activities such as picking up and releasing items with more precision as they are often more alert following engaging with sensory materials. The continuous action of engaging with these materials helps maintain a safe learning environment and opportunities to build stamina for educational activities.
