This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come excited to learn in two languages as part of our Spanish Immersion Program, which was adopted more than 13 years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Nine years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bi-cultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
Each student in my classroom is unique, and this year, I have two students with autism that are in need of sensory tools to use in my classroom. They would greatly benefit from having more seating options than the ones available in my classroom. One student is in my morning group and the other is in my afternoon group.
These sensory tools will allow my students to take a break to reset without the need to physically leave my classroom.
Other students in the class could also benefit from these tools too. Each child is unique and often he or she just need the right tool to calm down, feel safe and reset right where they are.
The sensory tools and lap desks will be placed by our classroom library and will be in addition to our calm area. My students with autism have different needs than most students in my classroom and by having this sensory area set up in my classroom, it will provide a safe place just for them to reset and work without the need for them to take a break somewhere else in our school.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
