This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach diverse learners both in and out of general education settings. My students come from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds. They have specialized learning needs, as well as wonderful strengths and talents. My students are amazing and I am so lucky to be their teacher!
My Project
This project will be used to support the social, emotional and academic needs of diverse learners in 1st and 2nd-grade classrooms. After nearly a year at home, many of my students have reentered the school building to participate in a hybrid learning model. Due to safety policies and procedure, our school day looks quite different than it previously did. We are no longer in constant motion within the classroom, shifting fluidly from group lessons at the carpet to partner activities with peers, utilizing shared materials. The reduction in movement can be especially challenging for students with diverse learning needs.
Sensory tools within the classroom have great value and purpose.
They can provide students with much needed tactile breaks during periods of extended sitting. They can support students' concentration and focus when working on challenging tasks. They can act as a calming tool and help students regulate feelings and emotions throughout the school day. This project will allow me to purchase specialized sensory tools to help my students be successful learners. Expandable breathing balls, therapy putty, stress balls and textured fidget objects will support my students social and emotional well-being throughout the school day. Sand timers will allow my students visual reminders of when they need to transition from a sensory break back to their work. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will allow me to purchase digital materials so I can continue to address the social, emotional and academic needs of my students who have remained in a fully remote learning model.
