Sensory Tools for Kids With ASD

Help me give my students the sensory input they need to learn and grow.

My Project

On behalf of my classroom team, I am seeking donations for sensory tools. We have the privilege of teaching six wonderful pre-school students who have level three (intensive) autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While they are still learning to communicate with us, they clearly love coming to school and are motivated to learn. However, one of the hallmarks of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a limited ability to filter and process information. While a neurotypical child might be able to prioritize input and ignore stimuli that isn't relevant, our students experience the world with different filters. Without choice-based sensory input, our students can become easily overwhelmed.

Having a rich, choice-based sensory diet is essential to student learning.

Sensory input allows our students to regulate their nervous systems and be ready to learn. The types of input that our students need varies greatly; some of our students need tactile input, while others require oral input of varying densities and textures. When our students become upset, some prefer visual inputs while others need vibration. The sensory input that our students need can change from day to day which makes it all the more vital that we have a wide array of tools available.

With your help, we are hoping to build up a "stock" of sensory tools so that we have enough to go around for the rest of the year. Our students have fidgets in their hands all day long and they occasionally get lost or broken. Having plenty of sensory tools available in our classroom will help our students learn to regulate, self-sooth, and develop life-long skills.
