My Project

The sensory tools on my list will help my students learn to recognize their sensory needs in order to regulate their behavior and improve learning during their school day. Many of my OT students need added visual input and more opportunities to touch and feel objects throughout their day. Some of my students need help from sensory tools to keep their bodies calm and minds focused. Other OT students need access to small manipulative toys and tools such as shortened pencils and connector toys to strengthen their small hands and promote coordination for writing and cutting.

Much of occupational therapy involves finding the right tool or activity that is motivating for a student, since many of the kids I work with are non-traditional learners.

Finding the right tool to teach letter formation, pencil grip, or calming strategies takes time and money, but is crucial for many of my learners. That's why it is essential for a school based occupational therapist to have many tools, games, and materials at the ready in order to find the best fit for each student as they work towards increased independence in their school environment.
