The students in my classroom present with a variety of challenges - academically, socially and emotionally. The design of my classroom is to provide a therapeutic environment in which students can feel safe and ready to learn while working towards Every day is a different day for our students with highs and lows of varying degrees. Because of this, the students within this class need all of the benefits and assistance available through this classroom.
The focus for each student when they enter the classroom is to stabilize, show self control and then work towards returning to the general education setting.
Students are assigned to the Transitional Learning Center classroom for social and emotional support. Students utilize the classroom as needed or on a scheduled basis throughout each day. School adjustment counselors are available to facilitate the teaching of social and interpersonal skills. For some students, building emotional intelligence learning how to use these coping skills, can take weeks and even months to master. By using various curricula and integrated services, we help children grades 2-4 meet their academic expectations while meeting their social and emotional needs.
My Project
Giving students control over their surroundings and a variety of sensory calming tools, gives students the ability to self regulate their emotions and be ready for learning. In order to create sensory tool boxes for students we need a variety of sensory items, including stress balls and materials to make our own sensory tools.
There are many times when students need time to self regulate their emotions, to be ready for learning without disrupting others, these sensory tools can help do just that!
The Emotions games will be added to the Social Emotional Learning curriculum in the classroom. These games teach expected emotions and self regulation in a fun interactive way.
In addition, the Find It games and maze activities will help improve focus and problem solving skills.
