My Students

It is hard to imagine something as simple as the light in a room completely altering your behavior in such a drastic fashion that many common places are too overwhelming for your body to handle. Unfortunately, this is the reality for my students which makes daily activities difficult.

The students in my self-contained classroom have a diagnosis of autism, and see the world in a different way.

Although my students face daily physical, cognitive, social, and/ or sensory issues their spirits are still high. They love listening to music and pretending to be Super Mario! My students are a great example of how autism is something they have, rather than who they are.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help introduce my students to different textures and calming strategies that will help them throughout the day. Items such as the textured blocks, balls, and moon sand present my students with new textures without overwhelming them. The larger balls will be used for my students to bounce freely, provided them with a way to release some extra energy and also provide them with a form of pressure when their feet hit the floor. Pressure from such things as stomping your feet, wheelbarrow walking and hugs provide a calming feeling to my students. The turtle light will provide a calming feeling in the classroom during relaxation time, giving my students the opportunity to practice self-calming techniques. Finally the cushions will provide sensory input to my students, allowing them to sit and participate in classroom lessons for longer periods of time.

This project is a way to help provide my students with new experiences that will benefit them on a daily basis.

Autism is a disability without a cure, however there are ways to help limit the impact that this disability has on their lives.
