This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach exceptional learners; these students are between the ages of 5 and 8 and have extensive cognitive disabilities that make the traditional school setting and typical tools and resources slightly out of reach.

Students, like mine, who have disabilities affecting their sensory processing and/or emotional regulation, need specialized instruction and an untraditional, creative classroom set-up in order to access learning in productive and meaningful ways.

In my classroom, we use visually engaging materials, tactile and kinesthetic learning activities, lots of music, and other sensory engagement to encourage the students’ development of pre-academic skills. But we can really step up our game and better support the students' sensory needs with a couple of big additions to our sensory toolbox: sensory swings and vibrating pillows.

Most of my students love playing on the swings - it is fun and provides much-needed vestibular and proprioceptive sensory input. Unfortunately, our school only has swings for our kindergarten students, which most of my students have already outgrown. I want to set up two sensory swings - one inside the classroom and another outside the classroom. Sensory swings are different than playground swings because they can offer more than forward-and-back swinging; the attachments can be enclosed to reduce visual sensory input, wrap around the student for added proprioceptive input, and spin in a circle for added vestibular input. When sensory needs are met with tools like these sensory swings, students can feel calmer and more relaxed, which will allow them to be ready to engage in more academic learning.

I am confident that my students will love the sensory swings and vibrating pillows. This project will not only make the students' learning environment that much more fun, but it will also make an impact on my student's progress toward their individual learning goals.
