This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a Boston Public School teacher at a Title I high school. A majority of our students are Black and Latinx students classified as economically disadvantaged. I teach in the Life Skills Program that serves students with Autism and moderate to significant intellectual challenges. My students work very hard to learn communication and academic skills that will help them transition to life outside of high school. We truly appreciate your support!

Unfortunately, our school does not have enough funding to supply our special education classrooms with resources that help our students thrive.

For example, because of my students’ disabilities, seating that provides sensory stimulation, like bouncing, rocking and soft support helps them focus on their academic learning and regulate themselves when they need a break. Noise canceling headphones help them manage their environment and their emotions. Trampolines provide sensory input and allow the students to productively use their energy so they can return to their learning with calm bodies, ready to focus. As I am sure you can imagine, having sensory seating and tools for just a few students is not ideal or fair. All students deserve the opportunity to have the best learning conditions possible. Please help us get started on our goal to have supportive seating and sensory tools for every student in my classroom.
