My students need a weighted snake, a vibrating snake, and a massager for our sensory center to help them with their sensory processing and self-regulation difficulties.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a special education teacher in a Title 1 school. I have seven of the greatest students in the entire world, all of whom have autism or multiple disabilities.
My students are in grades kindergarten through fourth, and all have unique sensory processing and self-regulation issues.
They exhibit challenging behaviors, due in large part to their need for sensory input. They often exhibit behaviors when they are seeking sensory input to calm their nervous systems. Their sensory needs make it difficult for them to focus and learn.
My Project
My students are in need of materials to help us stock a sensory center in our classroom. Students would use the center for a built in "sensory diet" and sensory breaks throughout the day. Students would also use the center for calming input when having a sensory meltdown or when in crisis.
With materials for a sensory center, students will be able to take sensory breaks and obtain the sensory input they need in an appropriate way.
This will help them with their sensory processing and self-regulation difficulties, and will decrease their inappropriate, sensory-seeking, acting-out behavior. As a result, students will be calm, focused, and ready to learn, as their sensory needs will be met. :)
