I teach an amazing range of students with identified learning disabilities in math, reading, and/or behavior. Some range from mild to more severe but each student works very hard every day. In my opinion, they have to work twice as hard to understand the content and overcome their learning disabilities and sensory needs. They are resilient and determined. They deserve the most efficient and effective teaching practices, resources, and learning environment.
As I teacher, I have to find creative, multisensory ways to teach current standards as well as fill in any gaps they have from previous grades.
Because of their learning disabilities, my students need specially designed instruction, hands-on materials, and repeated practice to help them be successful in the classroom. My students need multiple experiences with the same content to help them understand new concepts and how to apply the information. They are simply amazing workers! I am preparing them to be successful in school and in life.
My Project
In addition to academics, some of my students have sensory needs. Some of them are oversensitive to loud noises, bright light, and textures to name a few. They get overstimulated easily.
My students need sensory support to help them stay calm and be successful during the day.
This project will allow me to support them through items to squeeze and fidget with. These reduce stress and help students to focus on what they are learning. Some students need a cozy, small area to sit for a cool downtime. Some students are very distracted by usual classroom noises and require noise-canceling headphones to stay focused and able to work.
