This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are lucky to work at a very small school (about 250 students) where every teacher knows almost every student by name. About 60% of our students are English Learners and they come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds.

Though we are small, many of our students have experienced significant traumas.

We have spent the last 6 years working hard to make our school a trauma informed environment where every student can feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

My Project

We have worked hard to build a trauma informed environment for our students over the past few years and a big part of that has been creating calm down areas that are sensory rich. These spaces are areas that students can go to in order to express their feelings and return to a calm and ready to learn state without ever having to leave the classroom.

These types of areas are important in every classroom, but especially in the Special Education classroom where we work on self awareness and emotional management skills.

These items will help me to support my student's sensory needs, as well as give me much needed organization for my already existing sensory items.

Students can use the sensory wall, lego sets, and tiles to help when they are emotionally escalated. The drawers and carts will help keep the items organized and easy to keep clean (keeping things clean and sanitized at all times is so very important during these times). Finally, the dry erase paper notebooks will be useful to my students who benefit from being able to draw out or write to express their needs and emotions.
