"OMG, how do you do it?" and "oh, the hormones!" are comments that are all too familiar to middle school teachers. It truly does take a special kind of person to be a middle school teacher, and sometimes we need assistance to help our big kids regulate themselves in the classroom. A pearl of common wisdom imparted on teachers is that within a class, there are 3 teachers for its students: 1st is the main teacher, the 2nd is each other (their peers), and the 3rd teacher is the environment.
By having sensory support at the hands and feet, students can focus on developing their skills in my English language arts class.
The sensory stickers will be placed on their desks to provide an object to fidget with. Its textured surface offers students a moment to focus on something small when faced with something big such as a learning task. The footbands are for all of my learners to feel the need to release energy while having to sit at the desks to complete a learning task. Though small, these items positively contribute to our learning environment.
We've all experienced the struggle of middle school and the growing pains, embarrassing moments, and having the navigate through multiple subjects. Today's youth have it more complicated with phones, social media, and increased family challenges in the mix. Thank you for giving to this project and offering my students a small moment of safe relief.
