Help me give my students textured saucer switches, kinetic sand, model magic, Play Dough, therapy putty, water beads, sensory toys, and slime materials!
I am a special education teacher in a pediatric hospital setting. I work with inner city students of varying abilities in grades ranging from preschool to twelfth grade. My students are primarily nonverbal and non-ambulatory as a result of injury or illness. These amazing students are in the hospital for various reasons including injuries, surgeries, rehabilitation, and illness.
Since my students are nonverbal and non-ambulatory, they rely on alternate ways to communicate and access the everyday world.
Technology provides incredible opportunities for this population of students.
My Project
I work with students who are currently hospitalized in a pediatric hospital setting. My students are primarily nonverbal and non-ambulatory and are hospitalized for illness, injury, surgery, and rehabilitation. Many of my students have visual impairments and other sensory needs. I am looking to get more tactile materials for these students in order to enhance learning.
Since many of my students are nonverbal and have physical limitations, I am looking to purchase textured switches to access communication devices and learning materials.
As I previously stated, many of my students have visual impairments rely on tactile means to access their worlds. Tactile switches would be extremely beneficial for these particular students to access programmatic communication equipment as well as iPads and switch activated toys.
I am also looking for sensory materials for my superhero students to engage in learning and leisure activities. Kinetic sand, play dough, model magic, and therapy putty will allow for students to participate in fun and educational projects. These materials will also aid the students in strengthening fine motor skills.
Having fun and exciting materials for my students to use is so important. Since these children are hospitalized and facing many challenges, academic sessions not only provide opportunities for learning, but also an escape from reality.
