My students need a variety of low-vision tactile and sensory books, toys and fidgets for participating in reading and play activities with their peers.
This is my second year as an occupational therapist in a diverse, low-income school district in the state of Washington. Our district has a high rate of special education students (>12%), students who receive free and reduced priced lunch (>50%), and minority students (>50% non-white). I work with preschool through fifth graders with a variety of disabilities, including autism, visual impairments, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, specific learning disabilities, and more.
Despite a variety of challenges, my students are resilient, talented, hardworking, and eager to learn.
In occupational therapy, we work on self-regulation, positive behavior, following routines, dressing, play, handwriting, and other important life skills.
My Project
Students with low-vision miss out on a number of every day school activities. Everyday tasks like reading, writing, and play time are inaccessible to many low-vision or blind students. Many simple items can be replaced with tactile alternatives to allow for an added level of interaction for our students who are low vision or blind.
Tactile books and toys will allow our low-vision students to engage in academic and play activities with peers.
By providing tactile books, fidget toys, switch adapted toys, and tactile toys our students will have a wealth of opportunities to stay engaged alongside their sighted peers.
