Sensory Supplies for an Autism Support Classroom

My students need supplies like a dream chair, a weighted headband, and a foot rest, in order to meet their sensory needs so that they are able to focus and learn.

My Students

My students are unique, ambitious and full of creativity! In my classroom I currently have 7 children all who have a diagnosis of Autism. They absolutely love hands-on learning, active play and working together to complete various tasks. They love to come to school each day in order to learn, play and work on how to positively interact and socialize with their classmates.

My students benefit from consistency and the use of extremely engaging activities.

Our school is located in the inner city part of Philadelphia in an impoverished neighborhood where a lot of children don’t have basic necessities and therefore lack the skills to be successful in today’s world. As a teacher, I strive to fill this gap and give children experiences that they may not have had otherwise

Children in my classroom absolutely love learning, and each learns at their own pace and level. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies including one on one work, group work, sensory adaptations including alternative seating, various adaptive tools, communication devices and weighted classroom items in order to ensure all students’ needs are being met.

My Project

Many of my students face challenges in learning due being over stimulated within the classroom environment. This can include sounds, lights, smells, taste, sensory imbalance, internal preoccupation etc.

Sensory materials enable my students to better learn by helping to control some of the things that their systems become over stimulated by.

The weighted materials and various seating options will enable by students to better focus by helping them control their bodies. The light covers and headphones will provide some relief from the harsh classroom lighting and sounds. The chew necklaces and pencil toppers will give my students a safe option of things to mouth when they feel the need.
