My Project

For students in general, but especially students with disabilities, a multi-sensory approach to teaching and functioning has positive effects on student learning. When students are allowed to experience their world while having access to sensory regulatory items, new avenues for learning can be discovered.

The items in the project will help students function and participate in their general education classroom and truly show what they know by having sensory items available to assist with self-regulation.

Kickbands for student chairs will allow students to move their bodies in a non-disruptive manner while alleviating the need for movement breaks outside of the classroom. Weighted backpacks will help students who require extra input to stay calm while moving around in their environment. Sensory bottles are very helpful in increasing focus and also acting as a timer for students needing to have a break from the demands of the classroom while remaining in their general education setting. Sand trays are also extremely beneficial in providing a multi-sensory approach to learning and retaining new information in a novel way that maintains student interest in non-preferred tasks.
