Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Through sensory activities, children engage in problem-solving, critical thinking, and memory retention. In my classroom I will set up stations where students will experiment with different types of things: stress balls, movement toys, and games to help them focus and stay calm.
Sensory activities play an important role in a child’s learning and development.
Much of our learning comes through our ability to use our senses to retain information. Sensory play is any activity that stimulates our senses – touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. It helps children interact with and make sense of the world that surrounds them.
In addition to sensory activities, I will offer small weighted sensory lap blankets for students that are feeling anxious, fidgety, and stressed. Sensory lap blankets can help kids feel grounded and relaxed in stressful situations with gentle deep pressure. The theory behind weighted blankets is that they use deep pressure stimulation to potentially improve your mood, reduce stress.
My students come from low income families. Each special student has many life experiences at home and at school. I want to make school and the classroom feel like a place where they are comfortable and can share their experiences and emotions. With these materials, they will be on their way to a successful school year.
