Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are charismatic, creative, and highly motivated individuals. They come from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. These students all live close to the school and dedicate most of their day to being at school and immersing themselves in learning, arts, and social justice.
As part of our curriculum, the students learn to work hard to become independent learners and to also be a positive part of their community.
These students are learning about the world and people around them through their classroom learning. They are encouraged to apply what they learned and think of creative and collaborative approaches to solving real-world problems around them. These students are 5 and 6 years old and are already making strides toward reaching college and making the world a better place.
My Project
This project will give these students the supplies they need to participate in engaging learning stations. The students will benefit from the word building games, sentence building activities and realia to provide authentic experiences for them to practice encoding and decoding. These tools are necessary to provide students with the opportunity to acquire the phonics and vocabulary needed in order to succeed in spelling and writing in first grade.
This class is made up of all types of learners who are eager to get their hands dirty and learn!
These items will benefit the students and their sensory needs, as well as academic needs. This will allow students with various learning styles to shine in word work. We will use construction paper, markers, highlighters, and paint in order to provide an outlet to connect art and writing. They will use the play-dough to connect to phonemic awareness and letter building. These opportunities will help stimulate their brains and help them achieve.
First grade is the year students really put pen to paper! They learn a tremendous amount of letter combinations, their reading comes alive, as well as their writing. In order to support my students, we need chart paper for whole group lessons, a pointer to point to sounds in the room and timers for their stations. In addition, students need whiteboard markers and pencil grips to be able to practice writing across various mediums. All these things will help make this subject come alive and help inspire them as learners. The sensory stations will give students a leg up in encoding and writing and decoding in reading! This helps ensure they are ready for second grade, ready to become lifelong readers and lovers of learning new things!
