Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The motto at our school is “Supporting Student Strengths with Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism.” This project focuses on fostering students’ strengths by adapting materials, so all students can access their curriculum. I created this project because I found a unique need for supplies that will help me modify materials for students, which will help engage and motivate the students. Many of the students I work with come from limited resources and have behavioral, medical, and academic needs. Some of the students live in group/foster homes and it can be a challenge to find motivating activities that will engage them. In addition many students enjoy hands on learning materials that they can manipulate.

Sensory exploration by using tactile supplies (sand, water beads, Play-Doh, etc.) is an important way materials are adapted to meet the needs of our students.

In addition, students at this school access their curriculum in unique ways (VOD access, picture icons, gestures, AAC technology, vocalizations, verbalizations, communication core boards, and other functional methods of communication).

My Project

My students will be motivated to engage in the hands-on activities described below that these materials will allow us to create.

The requested materials will help facilitate communication, while providing important sensory input for the students.

Play-Doh: Students can practice their speech sounds with Play-Doh "smash" games and can also relate to specific themes by making holiday cookies in December for example.

Wax Craft Sticks: These can be used to outline specific areas for visually impaired students, so they can use tactile exploration when tracking with Braille or when working on boundaries.Art Sand: This material provides a unique texture to add to projects or books to make pages stand out and more meaningful to students who need sensory support.

Water Beads: These beads are great to use when making category bags for themes. For example farm or ocean animals can be added to bags along with the water beads and students can receptively and expressively identify the contents.Motion Sand: This is such a fun way to help students learn about the concept of opposites (slow moving sand vs fast, building a high tower vs small, compacting the sand tight vs letting it spread out).Glue Sticks: Glue sticks can help raise and outline pictures in a book, so those needing sensory support or those with visual impairments have this input. Grow Snow: This is especially fun during December and January as students learn about animals that live in cold climates; however, they also enjoy sifting through the "snow" to find icons that can be matched to a story.
