Help me give my students with autism a safe and sensory filled space to provide for their specialized needs. Especially the gymnastics mat and inflatable pea pod- our students will find a comforting calming spot.
Our school opened two Mild Intellectual Disabilities Self-Contained classrooms this year, after several years of not having these classrooms to accommodate the needs of our special children. Our students are full of life and eager to learn. They require a greater amount of support and one-to-one learning in order to succeed in a public school setting. The smiles on children's faces are enough to make this difficult career an everlasting one. However, there is quite a difference when a child who requires so much more than a typical classroom can accommodate, smiles after accomplishing something that may seem simple to us.
ID Mild classrooms are designed for the specific needs of students.
These students have a strong student services team helping the student and their families develop individualized education plans that teachers are required to follow. These students are able to utilize the public school setting, which is their right while obtaining a free and appropriate education designed to meet their individual needs.
My Project
All materials being requested will provide a sensory space to provide the sensory, tangible, and behavioral needs of each exceptional child in the classroom. In my experience, weighted blankets and toys have aided in comfort during anxious situations, as well as for understanding where a child fits in space and time. The lower lap desks with help our littles to stay focused on their school work and have another place to use the tablets that were so graciously donated this year.
Autism, developmental delays, specific learning disabilities; all require a greater and more intense academic experience.
What better way to help meet these needs than to provide sensory spaces, safe comfy corners, and adapted materials to enhance academics, character building, and daily life skills.
