This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all amazing individuals and have such high potential but need access to specialized materials to help them learn. Most of my students are also bilingual and come from low income homes in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Together, we work on a wide range of Speech and Language skills and tackle a wide range of needs from mild speech sound disorders to severe communication needs due to hearing loss or Autism. Funding is tight in Chicago as we are encouraged to do what we can with what we have, but these students deserve more in order to reach their full potential.

My Project

These materials will help my students focus and give them a safe place to go when they feel overwhelmed. The seat cushions will be used with my wiggle worms to help them focus during stories and activities at the table or on the rug. As hard as they try to listen, their body needs movement. These seat cushions will allow them to move without distracting themselves or their peers. Then, for those tough days when they need a break, they can go in the tent for a quiet space and hug a weighted friend to help calm them down before returning to the lesson.
