All of my students are ages 5-7 years old and receive Special Education services. Their needs are as unique as they are! They enjoy participating in their classroom community, playing with cars and trucks, and big pushes on the tire swing. All students currently on my caseload are African American and are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Students' families live in our neighborhood communities and make attempts to be involved in their children's education. These kiddos are such a joy in their classroom and school communities!
My Project
My students are a unique bunch, requiring multiple forms of sensory input throughout their day. While there are some sensory items already being utilized, these students would benefit from sensory items that meet each of their unique needs.
These sensory items will be used to help my students, and others who might need it, calm before an escalation occurs or recoup after, increasing their availability for social and academic learning.
Without proper regulation items and strategies, students remain agitated throughout their day and cannot access their education. Creating a safe space in our school for students to regain emotional control of their body will allow for a better overall educational experience for these students and the community.
This project includes smaller items for pressure or tactile stimulation and larger items to create cozy corners with limited stimulation. All the items will be available to students who need them to increase their social and emotional learning. Specifically, items such as the weighted vest and weighted blankets will be used in the students' classrooms to help students stay regulated. The egg chair is the item I am most looking forward to and will be used for students to create a calming space, since many of my students like rhythmic back-and-forth movements when trying to calm. Additionally, the small tents will be used as an escape, quiet space for calming. These items will be great ways to ensure the emotional well-being of students.
