My Students

We are a full inclusion, Title 1 school. Over 50% of our approximately 650 students, qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Our students range from a variety of economic backgrounds and learning abilities.

Many of our students live in rental homes and duplexes which causes quite a bit of transient enrollment.

Our students and faculty are pushed to work hard and continually improve. Our administration believes firmly that people do not learn, perform and improve in the same way. To that end differentiation is fully implemented throughout the school.

My Project

My school library I has a fixed schedule of 35 inclusion, general education and special need classes. We have many students diagnosed with autism, sensory processing disorders, and ADHD. Children with these type of sensory issues can easily respond to over stimulation causing stress which prohibits learning.

While the need to excessively fidget is not a known learning disorder, it can make it difficult for a child to focus.

This can result in frustration and lack of participation.

Introducing sensory devises such as handheld fidgets and cushions can help ease sensory overload and keep the students involved in the learning process. My students need outlets for their "fidgets" through hand manipulatives like tangles and other sensory items. These can be used by all students at their tables during lessons. Some of the students would greatly benefit from cushions they can use in the reading corner and at the tables. The little bit of balance on the cushion can help with the students need to move.
