This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at an amazing Title I school where 85% of our students come from a low socioeconomic status. Most of the families I serve have working parents with little or no education. Comprised of mostly minorities, our school has a spirit of unity that shines through. We are a large family nearing 900 students. The passion for learning is felt when you walk through the doors. I work with children with special needs in grades K through 5th. My students are loving and kind and have real determination. I strive to teach them the skills they need to be active participants in our community.
My Project
Alternative seating such as wobble cushions and wobble chairs allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Making sure students are comfortable and allowing them to self manage their needs is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given an opportunity to get their energy out with chewable jewelry, stress relief balls, or with the use of a weighted blanket. Chair bands can be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out also.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them options to take more roles in managing their sensory needs.
