I am the intervention specialist in a second grade full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the 9 students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!
My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability level, in this setting.
There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!
My Project
Our students identified with disabilities are included in the general education class all day. Our instruction is differentiated so students can access the curriculum at their own levels. With that being said, some students need access to an area in which they can get out their energy before starting a new lesson. Some students cannot physically contain themselves and have difficulty sitting still for longer than 10 minutes.
I would love to be able to give our students the opportunity to run through a quick sensory gym to get out their wiggles before returning to instruction.
If I see a student getting squirmy, I pull them aside for 5 minutes and allow them to jump on the trampoline or walk across balance pods. They love to jump with the Flybar and the resistance bands for their chairs have been an easy and non-distractable solution!
Finding a location with little distraction to other classrooms has been difficult. We finally came up with a hallway to put to great use with all of our sensory materials. The hallway is very bare as it stands, and I would love to make it into a sensory-based hallway with a fun obstacle path using vinyl stickers I can make on my Cricut. I would also love the make a mermaid fabric sensory board to place in the hallway. I plan to paint the hallway nice calming colors with calm lighting as well.
We have amazing students in our school, and we want to give them what they need in our inclusion classroom to be successful.
