Sensory Solutions for Little Ones

My Students

My students are absolutely amazing. They come from a large, first-ring suburban school district in western New York State. They thrive on the stability that school brings. They were placed into a smaller class due to cognitive, attentional, or emotional disabilities. In addition to their classroom instruction, some receive therapies such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, vision therapy, psychological counseling, and physical therapy to assist them in making progress with their program.

My students love to learn and grow.

Although they may learn differently from their peers and at a different rate, they are capable of doing amazing things. All skills are practiced routinely and repetitively. Providing my students with plentiful materials is essential so that this repetition does not become boring is something that I strive for on a daily basis.

My Project

Our classroom is in the midst of construction a sensory room in order to meet our students' needs and help them to perform to the best of their abilities. However, we need items with which to fill our sensory space.

The light filters will help to dim and filter the one florescent light that will be in this space.

We will then use the waterfall lights to provide a more calming ambient lighting. The bubble tube and floor mats will help to make our space more comfortable for our students.

This space will allow our students to take a break when they're feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. By providing a safe space to handle their emotions, we will decrease their negative behaviors and increase their academic performance.
