My vision-impaired students need tools that will help them learn using different senses and improve social skills and meet their sensory needs. They need items such as Shape It Sand, an Alphabet Feel and Find Tub, weight belts, sensory tubs, a hearing protector and a fiber optic light.
My 2 classes consists of 15 students with various diagnoses. Every morning we start with Get Ready to Learn Yoga followed by a chant which they love. By the end of the year I would love to see more students participating in the movement part of the Yoga.
My students have different diagnoses such as Downs Syndrome, Autism, and developmental delays.
Most of them are non ambulatory and non verbal. My school serves developmentally delayed students from 5-13. The students all receive some type of related service such as physical, occupational and speech therapy. These students work hard every day but need additional tools to help them succeed.
My Project
The students academics are primary, They do however, need sensory breaks throughout the day. The items chosen will help them to socialize with each other using "toys", help them to sort, match and feel and find. The visually impaired students will also enjoy more classroom participation. Developing these skills will help them grow and develop skills for their future success.
Shape and Sand- used as a fun activity during breaks and as a reward.
Feel and find, Alphabet Feel and Find, etc. will help improve fine motor coordination and teach the letters of the alphabet. It will encourage tactile discrimination for all students, especially the visually impaired.
Fiber optic light will provide visual stimulation and improve visual attention, especially for students who are not easily aroused.
The hearing protector is for the student who is auditory-sensitive and needs a more quiet environment, and the weighted vest will be used to provide a more calming effect on the students who need that input.
These students are curious and like to explore.
These donations will allow them to use different senses and will help motivate them to learn. They need brightly colored and fun tools to help keep learning fun and interesting.
