Students with sensory disorders often time struggle to maintain focus, react appropriately to stimuli, and to engage in everyday social situations. It is my hope that through appropriate sensory integration, my students will learn to become self-regulated and take ownership of their behavior.
My students are average children yet come from low-income homes.
Many students in my class suffer from lack of security away from school and crave structure. It is my job to use specific strategies to address each child's pattern of sensory processing to help the child adapt to their surroundings. Many studies have shown that weights are an effective tool for helping children feel secure in multiple environments. With active third graders, some may feel that a blanket is more appropriate than a vest. Fashion is so important to 8 year old's!
My Project
My students are used to an active environment in my classroom. I try to use many different items to help all students reach their potential-academic, personal, and emotional. I have a special area in my classroom that allows students to visit if they need a "time out" to gather their ideas/thoughts so that they can make the most of their day. Students will benefit from these materials not only in this "time out" area but throughout the day since they are mobile. Students can get that safe and secure feeling while focusing on instruction and allowing them to get the most out of all lessons.
My classroom has a high need for sensory items.
These materials will help provide a sense of security for those who may not receive it in other environments. They are mobile and compact enough to move around easily in the classroom. They are also durable enough to use from year to year.
