My Students

Do you remember when you were a child and you had that special stuffed animal you cuddled with when you were scared or sad? Or maybe you were like me and when I got upset I would sit with my feet in my mom's flower pond. My students are still looking for something that helps them to calm themselves.

My preschool students are some of the most incredible kids I have ever met.

They come from one of the most violent communities in Washington, DC and most come from single family homes. Most of my student come to me with more life experience they I do as an adult. These experiences often make it very difficult for them to control their emotions and to express their feelings in appropriate ways. It is heartbreaking to see children only three years old, so angry they need to flip a table over to get their feelings out. In an effort to try and help these students, I tried bring different sensory materials into the classroom for them to use to calm themselves. For some children this worked and for others it didn't. It is my hope with more sensory materials I will find something each child can use to help them control their emotions.

My Project

These resources will be used to help children disengage from high emotion situations and calm themselves. These sensory materials will be placed throughout the classroom in all the centers to not only keep students engaged in the center but also as a release for students when they find themselves having strong emotion. Having some in each center will allow for an object to always be close at hand when a student needs one.

This project is so important to the emotional health and development of my children.

They need the opportunity to explore with different materials to help them find that one special thing that helps to calm them.
