My classroom is full of curious, active, hands-on learners. While they come to school with enthusiastic hearts and minds, their neurological make up makes it difficult to sustain positive engagement throughout the school day. My students crave movement and sensory input to set their systems up to maximize their successes in social interactions and learning opportunities.
Behavioral outbursts are a way my students communicate what they need; my approach is to understand what their behavior is telling me, identify where their skill deficits lay, and provide developmentally appropriate supports.
Within these intentional supports, an effective collaborative model with input from parents, teachers, occupational therapy and speech therapy will be on-going.
I am committed to providing all students access to a high quality education. Research has shown that the materials requested for this project are effective tools in helping students meet their goals.
My Project
These research proven tools will foster our students development in acquiring skills and strategies to help manage their maladaptive behaviors and emotions. To effectively support behaviorally challenging students sensory tools are needed. With these tools and guidance, children will learn how to modulate their internal states so they can maximize access to the curriculum and be successful in school.
The sensory tools, such as the steam roller, sand table, manipulatives and physio-balls, will promote self regulation so that our students can communicate their needs and feelings, participate effectively in the classroom and develop positive relationships.
