I work with students that have an Individualized Education Plan. These students have a range of disabilities. Many of them come from low income families, where resources are scarce. Our school does not qualify for Title 1 funding, despite the numerous low income families. This makes it difficult for our school to provide the materials that would help my students be more comfortable and productive in class.
This year I am working with one student with Albinism and visual impairment, nine of my students are Autistic, 6 students with ADHD, and 12 students have a specific learning disability.
These disabilities provide a wide range of behaviors and academic abilities.
My Project
Working with students that have sensory sensitivity can be challenging. Having a variety of ways to allow them to move and find comfort while working is important. Having bands on the chairs allows them to kick and bounce while limiting disruption to others in the class. The stability seats would allow students to move while remaining in their seats.
Harsh florescent lighting in the classroom can cause anxiety and eye strain.
By adding filters over the florescent lighting it provides students a tranquil atmosphere that will be soothing to students with special needs. It will also reduce eye strain, which in turn will increase academic work time.
