Sensory Seating Helps Kids Focus!

Help me give my students wobble cushions! They can help children that are constantly moving about, fidgeting and maybe rocking in their chair.

My Project

It is thought that these children are using their movement to help to stay alert and regulate. Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.

Sensory chairs are designed to help the children who constantly fidget when seated in the classroom.

Children that move about in their seats are typically called ‘sensory seekers‘ in the sensory literature. Often they are looking for more vestibular sensory input. Vestibular sensory input refers to our balance and movement sense. This sense is not only responsible for our balance, but also helps us to stay alert and focused. Some children need more vestibular input, or movement, to keep attending than others. Occupational therapists often suggest a sensory seat for these children.
