Help me give my students fidget and calming toys like kinetic sand, timers using sand, stress balls, and balance balls. Social-emotional books will help with teaching strong feelings, and pocket charts will help build SEL skills.
SEL benefits both children and adults, increasing self-awareness, academic achievement, and positive behaviors in and out of the classroom. From my experience as a UPK teacher teaching in poverty, I see that students come into school with more challenging behaviors and intense feelings and lack the skills to help self-regulate these emotions. In this project, we are asking for fidget toys, stress balls, sand, and other materials that will help the students to calm or build self-help skills with integrative toys that can calm strong emotions, teach and regulate self-regulation skills, and identify strong emotions that a friend or themselves may be having.
With young children, hands-on learning is a must in order to develop understanding, and these materials are in constant need.
This is especially true since many of my students do not get the opportunity to hold a pencil, an abundance of books, scissors, or simply play with a variety of toys. They love to play and learn, so my goal is to bring toys into my classroom that can contribute to social-emotional learning.
