My Project
We are a Talented and Gifted School and my students are sensory seekers. I work with students in a Dual-Language and Talented and Gifted (TAG) program. There are quite a bit of neurodivergent students in our program and they seek out sensory input to regulate their bodies to get them right for learning.
Sensory smart classrooms assist with classroom management.
Addressing the needs of some students by providing and establishing a universally designed classroom allows students to not feel targeted, and all students will be able to benefit from the materials.
Some of the materials are adapted for my students who struggle with attention to tasks. I need to adapt their materials and create support to provide them access to their educational program. Adapted materials like the slant board or pipsqueak markers help my students with those fine motor needs.
Some sensory-seeking items that also help are fidget bands for those students who can't seem to keep their legs still. The bean bag will provide a relaxing seat for those students to feel snug and regulated in order to learn. Light covers will help with the brightness of the classroom which can cause anyone a headache.
The more relaxed and safer we feel in an environment the more we are willing to participate and engage with what is going on in our surroundings.
