Help me give my students a safe sensory room to assist them in regulating their bodies. I teach junior high students with severe disabilities who frequently need a place to decompress.
Teaching students with severe disabilities comes with a unique set of challenges. One of the main challenges we face is negative behavior, that can be brought on by a student's specific sensory needs or their inability to communicate. We strive to accommodate these needs within the classroom by dimming lights, offering fidgets, and other special sensory tools. Sometimes, however, the student's need is greater than what we can safely accommodate in the classroom and we have to utilize a quiet place in our vocational room.
We'd love to offer our students a variety of choices when it comes to their physical and emotional regulation.
Swinging, hammock, and spinning chairs provide vestibular motion that can help with communication and physical regulation. Different lights, lava lamps, and projectors produce a calming low light atmosphere. A variety of fidgets give students the opportunity for tactile input and puzzle solving while practicing being mindful using the social emotional posters.
Our goal is to increase learning by decreasing negative behaviors while allowing students a calm, quiet, place to regulate themselves when sensory sensitivities become overwhelming.
