My class has 7 loving children with Autism and Developmental Delays being served in a Self-Contained classroom. This project will also benefit the older grades Self-Contained classroom that has 6 students with the same special needs.
Our students are eager to learn and love showing off their knowledge!
Our staff and students at the school are very emotionally supportive of our students and all the progress they make each year, but we often lack the funds to purchase the necessary materials to facilitate student learning.
Our students learn best through a variety of methods, including sensory integration, direct instruction, hands on learning, and positive behavior supports.
My Project
Currently, both Self-Contained classrooms for students with Autism at my school are working hard to develop a sensory space for our students. The students would greatly benefit from access to flexible seating to meet their sensory needs. The Horizontal SoftRocker provides a safe way for students to independently soothe themselves. The hardwood frame and reinforced vinyl make for a long lasting rocker our students can utilize for years to come.
Having appropriate and sturdy sensory tools available to students throughout their learning environment will encourage independent coping strategies for students with sensory needs.
With these independent coping strategies, we hope to decrease behaviors and increase student learning.
