My students are inquisitive, creative, and motivated to absorb experiences and learning. They arrive to the classroom with a rich cultural history.
Many are refugees, having spent some or all of their lives in refugee camps or locations exposed to war, violence, natural disasters, and instability.
Their school histories are often characterized by transitions, interruptions, or few to no opportunities to safely attend. All of my students are English language learners in the beginning phases of English acquisition. They genuinely demonstrate gratitude and desire to understand and express, connect with adults and peers, and contribute to our community.
Our school is situated directly outside a large urban site and is considered a high-poverty area. 85% of the attending students are high needs as determined by the state. The student body is large and ethnically diverse with 60% speaking a native language other than English.
My Project
A sensory room is a special room designed to develop a person's sense, usually through special lighting, music, and objects. It can be used as a therapy for children with limited communication skills. Our school needs materials that can be used for a sensory room. Many of our students have needs that could be addressed by utilizing this room. The room would include materials such as a play floor, which changes colors when pressure is applied. It also includes a peanut ball, sensory tunnel, and sensory sock as a form of sensory therapy for students. A bubble tube, optic light, liquid light projector would be used for therapy as special lighting in the room. The pea pod would be a great addition by giving students a confined space to relax. A crash pad can is also essential in a sensory room, helping with their sensory skills. Last, the sensory disorder bundle will help students individually work on their sensory skills by wearing objects.
