Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
After fourteen years of teaching, I needed a change. Having completed my master's degree in school counseling, I found myself in limbo over where to turn next. My principal asked me if I would be interested in the ECE/PK for students with disabilities. After nine years in middle school , I figured why not. Let's give it a try! Last year, there were 9 students enrolled in the program. I currently have 21 students, ranging in ages 3-5 with a wide-range of disabilities. In addition, the life skills classroom utilizes our facility and sensory room.
I wish I could tell you one thing about these babies that makes them special.
They are all so remarkably special that words could not adequately describe the life in these children. They have a special light in their eyes that must be witnessed in person.
As a teacher, we are supposed to teach our children. This has not been the case. These children have taught me everything about life and love. Most of all, I want to give back to a group that deserves a room and so much more!
My Project
Autistic children see and perceive the world around them differently. Their senses are often heightened and experience lights, colors, and sounds in an awesome way. Sensory rooms allow autistic children to explore, engage, and enrich their learning expereinces. The optic lights will be used on the floors, ceilings, and walls to engage the children. The bubble tank will be added to the room to create an additional sensory explosion. Sensory rooms have been proven to help autistic children calm down, express themselves, and learn dramatic play.
Our current sensory room is bare, white walls, and a few objects for interaction.
