Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an incredible group of students that deserve the best that I can offer.
My school is located in a suburb of Atlanta, GA.
We are a Title 1 school with over 90% of our population on free and reduced-price lunch. I teach special needs preschool students and I serve them from the day they turn three years old (if they qualify for services) until the end of their pre-K year. My particular classroom contains mainly students with Autism or students who thrive in a more visual, structured classroom. Each and every student has something to teach me. I only hope that I can teach them something during the short time they are with me.
My Project
My students need bumpy vibration cushions, gumfuns (fine motor fidget toys) and bouncy horses to sit on and use during structured learning activities to help them attend and maintain focus.
Most children have difficulties regulating their little bodies but children with autism and autism-like symptoms have even more trouble regulating their little bodies.
Think about it, what do you do when you are sitting down in a meeting and are trying to maintain focus and pay attention? (Tap your pencil, tap your foot, doodle?) These are the little things that we unknowingly do to keep our minds focused. My children do not have these types of strategies, they only know that they need to move, so they get up and move sometimes within confines of our circle without disrupting others, however, this is a rare occurrence. Children usually get up, leave circle and prefer to run around the room instead. Bouncy horses, vibration bumpy cushions, and fidgets are just a few of the differentiated items necessary to help children attend to important preschool subjects. (and to give them a reason to want to stay in circle too!)
My students also have issues with self-soothing at nap time. Some of them are so, so tired, but they just cannot rest. This is where the soothing vibration pillows will come in and help. Just as we use the vibrations of our cars, our laps, and specialized chairs for our infants, these pillows will help my students. Vibrations even help to calm agitated children.
With the addition of these sensory related items, you will be helping my students to grow and learn.
