This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach students primarily with Autism and developmental delays. A majority of my students struggle in new environments or a sensory stimulus and have tantrums and meltdowns. Outbursts are their way of expressing feelings of agitation, frustration, sensitivity, fear, anxiety, or whatever they perceive as a sensory assault.

To help my students when they are feeling overwhelmed with environmental stimulus I am looking to put together sensory kits.

Calming toys that use repetition, vibration, or soft sound, can provide a soothing experience and allow children to safely decompress when there is too much sensory information. Fidget toys, like stretchy bands or sensory bracelets, can give anxious hands something to do and help to relax.

These sensory toys will help my students relax, focus, and calm down to a scenario or event. It helps them grasp objects with decreased fear and discomfort, ultimately helping them play naturally. Futhermore, these sensory materials will help develop social learning skills.
