I am a Teach for America alumna teaching at a Title I school in southwest Houston, Texas. I teach Kindergarten in an English as a Second Language setting, with twenty-two 5-6 year olds in my class and 10 languages represented. As we grow as a community, we deeply care about each others dreams.
Maria Montessori said, "The senses, being explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge."
My students are intensely curious about the ocean, dinosaurs, princesses, castles, building and creating. Each and every day as I listen and work with my students I see the next archaeologists, engineers, writers, and marine biologist diligently working. Their natural curiosity about the world and how it works inspires me to learn more in order to share more with them. Their desire to know more and drive our learning with the "why" shows me how eager they are to learn through exploring all that is around them.
My Project
I am requesting sensory sand, beads, and tools for my students to engage with at our sand/water table this year. Through the use of these materials, students will be exposed to new kinesthetic learning that will extend what is taught in lessons and allow for them to continue this learning through sensory play.
The sensory sand, beads, and play materials will bring to life the concepts taught in science and math and allow them to apply their learning in a deeper and meaningful level by doing.
Students will be able to have hands-on engagement and apply why solids can be keep shape with sand and liquids cannot. They will be able to discover how the water beads can change shapes and size through observing and actively practice the scientific process.
These materials will additionally support my students as they build new oral language skills through sharing their learning by using these sensory play materials at the water and sand table together.
