My Students
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist. My students are mainly minimally/non-speaking communicators. Our school is located in a suburban area, which most students travel to via bus service.
Some of my students rely on Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems to communicate.
My Project
Children with Autism have varying needs and display a range of different behaviors. Activities should always be targeted according to their specific needs. Most children with Autism have difficulty processing sensory information.
Engaging children with autism in sensory activities in beneficial in several ways.
Sensory play helps stimulate the brain, builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, and improve sensory systems. It will also help improve coordination, as well as fine and gross motor skills. Having items with different textures and calming colors will help my student stimulate each of their senses. Items such as wobble chairs, weighted cushions, and cuddle balls will allow them to regulate their emotions when needed.
Sensory play stimulates one or more of the child's senses, allowing more opportunity for speech and language!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
