This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My preschool children enjoy exploring their senses! Some sensory play will allow for a fuller understanding of concepts
The students in my classroom are at high risk for failure, due to the impoverished areas for which they were born.
School is one of the safest places for them to go.
These kids are much smarter than we give them credit for. We can follow their lead in sensory play. We want to give them as many opportunities to use their senses as we can and develop all areas of the brain. They know what their bodies need and crave, all we have to do is provide the opportunities to discover them.
My Project
Sensory play is often associated with messes and adults having to clean up messy kids and rooms. However, it is much more than that. All of us use our senses each and every day to process the world around us and respond to it. We need the to better understand this information and be able to communicate it, as well.
The goal is to have children explore their senses in all areas of the room!
The water table will have light up water and blocks to set up. Various types of sand, dirt, and colors will be in the sand table, along with alphabet tools. The children will explore and build with sensory blocks in the block center. The pupils will have a cozy place to sit and read in the library. Art area will have play dough to create beautiful masterpieces.
When engaged in sensory play children use all of their senses. It promotes sensory integration which is the ability of the body to integrate and process all of the information it receives via the sensory modalities of touch, taste, smell, hearing, and vision. As children pour, dump, build, scoop, and explore they are learning about spatial concepts (full, empty). They learn pre-math concepts along with language and vocabulary. Messy play can be calming to children. It is not just about making a mess and getting dirty; it is an essential component to learning that encourages exploration and discovery through play.
