Sensory Play All. Day!

Help me give my students sensory bins to encourage learning through all their senses!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Sullivan's classroom raised $279

My Students

My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds but come to school every day ready to grow. At my school, children learn through hands-on exploration and cross-curricular instruction, supported by a STEAM-focused curriculum.

“What,” “why,” "when," and “how” are words that are embraced and encouraged in my classroom.

Students are agents of their own learning and given the space to investigate their interests. My classroom is a place for students to grow, imagine, build and thrive, all through learning.

My Project

My students of all ages BEG for sensory bins. Sensory bins may look like nothing more than playing, but in reality they support fine motor development, hand-eye coordination, volume exploration, provide additional social interactions, creativity, expand vocabulary, make real-world connections and more! Sensory bins can be any materials that students can explore through touch, smell, sound, and sight.

We like to make sensory bins that connect to our science objectives for the week.

After introducing each science unit my students take turns rotating through the sensory bins over the course of the week. My students demonstrate their understanding of the science concepts and vocabulary through a highly sophisticated process of brain development and nerve cell connections: play. Research shows that the benefits of these opportunities support children in communication, creativity, engagement with peers, making plans, and solving problems. These are 21st Century skills!

I have chosen my students' favorite units to build sensory bins for: Arctic animals and habitat, dinosaurs and fossils, space, weather, plants, and insects. Some of the "ingredients" in the sensory bins can be used for multiple themes like the sand, Poly-Fil, sifters, and tongs.
