My students are each extremely special to me. I have been a special education teacher for 18 years. Working with students K-5 that have a variety of strengths and needs. Our school teams work tirelessly to provide supports for students with special needs in their least restrictive environments. Over the years we have gained so much knowledge in strategies and interventions that work in helping students with various needs be successful in the regular education classroom. Sensory materials and flexible seating is just one of the many strategies that we have found to be successful in promoting self-regulation, emotion control, and overall attentiveness in not just students with special needs but with all students.
My Project
As a Special Education teacher at a public school that promotes inclusion, I help many students with disabilities become successful in general classrooms. Many times, I have to try to create my own flexible seating for these students, or beg and borrow from other teachers in the building. Having my own set of options for alternative seating and materials for sensory breaks, will allow me to help my students be engaged during small groups and in their regular education classrooms.
Balance balls, wobble cushions, body socks, and chair bands are all options that can help my students with sensory needs.
I believe with the right support and accommodations any student has the ability to learn. Please help support my students, and give them the resources they need to be successful.
