Sensory Overload

Help me give my students much-needed sensory items. Having unique sensitivities to certain types of sensory input can create challenges in everyday situations like school, work or community settings for students with autism.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in early transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade. They all have autism. My students are happy, eager to learn, and adventurous students with autism and speech impairments/communication deficits.

My students are able to answer yes/no questions, point to letters/sounds, comprehend simple storylines, and follow one-step directions.

They can respond to digital materials when presented with digital Nearpod lessons. Many are struggling academically, especially since the majority of my students were unable to attend in-person sessions last school year.

I'd like to engage my students with hands-on curriculum-based materials to help their understanding of grade level concepts and help nonverbal students communicate. My students need sensory materials to help ease their anxieties while in the school settings. I will embed these items into our school's Autism Program to help facilitate social-emotional development in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, and language development while promoting the social-justice standards of equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

My Project

For someone who is hypersensitive, it can take a lot of effort to spend all day under fluorescent lights, navigate a crowded space, or process conversations in rooms with background noise. This can be incredibly physically and emotionally draining and can leave the person feeling too exhausted to do other important tasks.

Many autistic people use stimming as a form of sensory seeking to keep their sensory systems in balance; repetitive movements, sounds, or fidgeting can help people with autism stay calm, relieve stress or block out uncomfortable sensory input.

My students benefit from squeezing Foam Beads, scissors, finger painting, and bubbles to help them when they are hypersensitive.

Sensory overload happens when an intense sensory stimulus overwhelms your ability to cope. This can be triggered by a single event, like an unexpected loud noise, or it can build up over time due to the effort it takes to cope with sensory sensitivities in daily life. Sensory overload can feel like intense anxiety, a need to escape the situation, or difficulty communicating.

When the brain has to put all of its resources into sensory processing, it can shut off other functions like speech, decision making, and information processing. My students need a variety of different sensory items to help them get through their school day. Sensory foam and paint help provide students with a sensory break throughout our school day.
